Our Assessment: The AutoMag Corporation Model 180 is a semi-automatic pistol known for its distinctive design and powerful performance. First produced in the late 1960s, this pistol was designed to fire the .44 AMP (Auto Mag Pistol) cartridge, a round created specifically for this gun to offer magnum-level power in a semi-automatic platform. The Model 180’s unique appearance, high-power cartridge, and limited production run have made it a sought-after firearm among collectors and enthusiasts. The Model 180 is notable for its sleek, futuristic stainless steel construction, which set it apart from the more traditional blued or blackened firearms of the time. It features a long, heavy barrel that contributes to its accuracy and ability to handle the powerful recoil generated by the .44 AMP cartridge. The pistol operates with a short-recoil rotating bolt mechanism, which is relatively uncommon in handguns, and was designed to manage the pressures of the high-powered ammunition. The .44 AMP cartridge, which the Model 180 was chambered for, is based on a shortened and necked-down .308 Winchester rifle case. It offers performance levels similar to the .44 Magnum revolver cartridge but in a semi-automatic format. This gave the AutoMag 180 a significant advantage in terms of firepower and velocity, making it popular for big-game hunting and long-range target shooting. However, the high cost of the ammunition and the pistol’s premium price limited its commercial success.
Overall, the AutoMag Corporation Model 180 remains a fascinating piece of firearm history, combining cutting-edge engineering with distinctive aesthetics, making it an enduring symbol of innovation and ambition in the handgun world. -R.E.
