Our Assessment: In an oversimplification, there are two types of sniper rifles in this world. There are rifles chambered to get the job done, and then there are rifles chambered to break records and take names. Welcome to ArmaLite’s AR-30. At first glance you might have thought of an AR-50 as this rifle sports the AR-50’s iconic look with the oversized muzzle brake and long profile. But the cartridge this rifle is chambered for is a whole different playing field. There are many ways to describe the .338, but to wrap this round in a nutshell, the Lapua Magnum was created to deliver more stopping power than a .308 while still shooting extremely straight. Field testing and time testing have proven this round true. In 2009, Craig Horrison, a Corporal of House in the British Army, used this round to record the longest confirmed sniper kill in combat (since broken). At a whopping 1.53 miles in perfect shooting conditions, this round still delivers on its promises. It is why this round is among the go-to-rounds for Finnish snipers who hold a place of highest honor for Simo Hayha of Finland who scored the highest number of confirmed kills to date during the Winter War. The .338 is sniper royalty. The Armalite AR-30 is a beefy throne to house that royalty and rule on the range. With a modified Remington 700 trigger with some of the lightest pull I’ve ever had the privilege of inspecting, this rifle is a dream. Although not the most comfortable stock, it is made for hard work and to do it well. Become a record breaking sniper yourself and snatch this 1 mile rifle while you can! Good Luck!
