Markings: There is no visible import mark. The top of the receiver is marked with a “chrysanthemum” (the Imperial ownership seal) and with three Japanese characters that translate to “99 Type”. The left side of the receiver is marked with the “28th series” symbol, the serial number, the symbol for Nagoya Arsenal, and with a small Japanese mark. There is a line on the left of the barrel shank that matches a line on the receiver. The bayonet lug, underside of the bolt handle, the extractor, the firing pin, and the inside of the safety are all marked with the last 3 digits of the serial number. The rear of the bolt handle is marked with small Japanese stampings. The rear of the safety has decorative metal work on it. The bottom of the butt has a small Japanese stamping on it.

Barrel Length: Approximately 25 ½ Inches

Sights / Optics: The front sight is an inverted “V” post set between two protective ears. The rear sight ladder has a fixed aperture when down and a sliding aperture when flipped up. The ladder is marked from “3 – 15”. The sides fold out to be used as anti-aircraft sights. They are marked “2” in the middle and “3” on the ends. There are inverted “V” notches on each side of the AA sights.

Stock Configuration & Condition: The two piece hardwood stock has a pistol grip, finger grooves, nosecap with the bayonet lug, hole for the missing cleaning rod, barrel band with sling loop & monopod, sling loop base on the left side of the butt, through bolt, and a metal buttplate. The barrel band has a monopod attached. The buttplate shows surface erosion and discoloration. The stock hardware shows scrapes and discoloration from oxidation. There are small drain holes located just ahead of the bottom metal and on the right side of the stock, above the through bolt. The stock shows numerous scrapes, scratches and compression marks. Many have damaged or removed portions of surface wood. Most of these marks have been oiled. The LOP measures 12 ½ inches from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttplate. The stock rates in about Good to Very Good overall condition.

Type of Finish: Blue

Finish Originality: Original. The metal has been treated with cold blue.

Bore Condition: The lands are semi bright and the grooves are light gray. The polygonal rifling is defined. There is intermittent erosion in the grooves.

Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 80% its metal finish. The metal has been treated with cold blue. The scratches show through the cold blue finish. The bottom metal has surface erosion showing through the cold blue finish. The metal shows scrapes, light scratches, and discoloration from oxidation. The barrel shows a freckling of light surface erosion. The left front of the receiver shows a small patch of surface erosion. The screw heads show use. The markings are deep. Overall, this rifle rates in about Very Good condition.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly.  We did not fire this rifle. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.
The monopod locks into place properly.

Box, Paperwork & Accessories: The rifle comes with an unmarked Japanese sling. The rubberized canvas has stiffened. It shows scrapes, surface loss, surface cracking, and light fraying on the edges. The sling has delaminated at the buckle. It is in about Good condition.

Our Assessment: This Japanese Type 99 Arisaka was made by the Nagoya Arsenal between 1939 and 1943. This is a collectible rifle that has an intact chrysanthemum and matching part numbers on the receiver, bayonet lug, bolt handle, extractor, firing pin, and safety.  It comes with intact anti aircraft sights, a monopod, and a rubberized canvas sling. Japanese slings are a rare find. This is a good looking Type 99 that will add to your WWII collection.
