Our Assessment:The Evans Old Model Repeating Rifle, chambered in .44 Short, stands out as a remarkable piece of late 19th-century firearm engineering. Manufactured by the Evans Repeating Rifle Company, it introduced a groundbreaking design feature: a helical tubular magazine positioned atop the barrel. This innovative magazine configuration allowed the rifle to hold an impressive 34 rounds of ammunition, far surpassing the capacities of contemporary rifles of its time.
Despite its innovative features and functional advantages, the Evans Repeating Rifle did not achieve widespread popularity compared to other rifles like the Winchester Model 1873. However, it garnered a loyal following among civilian shooters and hunters in the United States who appreciated its high ammunition capacity and smooth operation. Today, the Evans Old Model Repeating Rifle in .44 Short is highly esteemed by collectors and firearms enthusiasts alike, cherished for its historical significance and unique contribution to the evolution of rifle technology during the late 19th century.
