Our Assessment: Anschutz built its 1700-series sporting rifles around the Model 54 action, a design developed through decades of target-rifle work. When the .17 HMR arrived in the early 2000s, the 1717 carried that action into a different setting: a small-caliber field rifle intended to make good use of the cartridge’s speed and flat trajectory. The detachable magazine and sporting stock made it a repeater for practical shooting, while its engineering still reflected Anschutz’s precision-rifle background.
This 2008 Model 1717 pairs a 22-inch barrel and rollover-cheekpiece stock with a Leupold Rifleman 3-9x50mm scope. The cheekpiece gives the shooter a consistent position behind the optic, an especially useful feature when aiming at small targets. The included magazines complete its repeating setup. Together, the scope and stock show how this rifle was configured to put the .17 HMR’s speed to work with deliberate, precise aim rather than simply to offer a faster rimfire cartridge.
