Our Assessment: The American Historical Foundation 1836 Colt Texas Paterson is a commemorative reproduction of one of the earliest successful revolving firearms, produced by Pedersoli to reflect the distinctive design of Samuel Colt’s original Paterson revolvers. Introduced in the 1830s, the Paterson represented a major advancement in handgun development, featuring a revolving cylinder and folding trigger that set it apart from earlier single shot pistols. This late 1980s limited production example, numbered 94 of 950, emphasizes its presentation character with a full gold-plated finish, elevating the historic design into a display-oriented collector piece.
Chambered in .36 caliber black powder, this revolver follows the traditional five-shot percussion configuration associated with the Paterson pattern. The 9″ barrel provides a long, slender profile and balanced handling, while the simple sighting system, consisting of a mortised front cone and hammer-notch rear, remains faithful to the original design. The folding trigger and streamlined frame highlight the innovative nature of early Colt revolvers, reflecting a period of experimentation that ultimately led to more refined and durable designs.
This example presents in excellent to like new condition, retaining approximately 99% of its original gold-plated finish with only light handling wear visible. The walnut grip remains clean with minimal marks and no structural concerns, and the bore is bright with sharp rifling, appearing unfired. The action functions correctly, maintaining the mechanical integrity expected of a well-preserved reproduction. Accompanied by its display box and cleaning rod, this revolver represents a visually striking and well-maintained commemorative example of the Paterson pattern.
