Our Assessment: Built on the Mauser G33/40 action, this rifle begins with one of the most desirable lightweight military receivers of the Second World War, originally produced in 1942 at the Brno factory and marked with the “dot” code. The G33/40 was developed for mountain troops, prized for its reduced weight and compact dimensions, making it an excellent foundation for custom sporting rifles in the postwar era. This example was later transformed by Al Biesen of Spokane, Washington, one of America’s premier custom gunmakers, whose work is known for blending precision, balance, and understated elegance. Chambered in .25-06 Remington, a cartridge standardized in 1969 but popular as a wildcat long before, the rifle reflects the mid-century trend toward flat-shooting, high-velocity cartridges ideal for open-country hunting.
The rifle exhibits classic Biesen styling, with a one-piece walnut stock featuring fleur-de-lis checkering, a beaded raised cheekpiece, and refined appointments such as the capped semi-pistol grip, tipped forend, and checkered steel trapdoor buttplate. The stock remains in fine condition, showing only light handling wear and minor surface impressions consistent with careful use. The metal surfaces retain approximately 97% of their finish, with crisp checkering and largely intact jeweling on the bolt, underscoring the quality of the custom work. The barrel is properly marked with Biesen’s Spokane address, reinforcing its provenance, and the overall configuration maintains the clean, purposeful lines expected of a high-grade custom sporting rifle built on a Mauser action.
Mechanically, the rifle remains in strong functional condition, with the action operating correctly and the bore retaining sharp rifling with only minor fouling present. The drilled and tapped receiver with Redfield bases reflects its intended use with optics, aligning with the precision potential of the .25-06 chambering. This rifle stands as a well-executed example of a wartime Mauser action repurposed into a refined American sporting arm, combining European military engineering with the craftsmanship of a noted custom maker during the golden era of bespoke rifle building.
