Our Assessment: The Accuracy International AW sniper rifle is the main variant of the British Accuracy International Arctic Warfare (AW) rifle family of sniper rifles. It was designed to replace the Enfield type sniper rifles in the 1980s and beat out a Parker Hale offering for the military contract. In 1982 it was adopted as the L96A1 and once it got its start it never looked back, it has since been officially adopted by 25 countries. The next military to adopt it was the Swedish military and that is how the name Arctic Warfrae came to be. Special de-icing features allow it to be used effectively at temperatures as low as ?40 °C (?40 °F). The AW rifle featured a modified bolt with milled slots at the rear of the bolt to prevent bolt binding problems caused by penetrating water/ice, dirt, or similar debris. Further, the thumb-hole, bolt handle, magazine release, and trigger guard on the AW were enlarged, and the magazine floor plate was fitted with protruding grasping tabs to allow use with heavy Arctic mittens. The resin stock side-panels were replaced with sturdier polymer panels that were less brittle in subzero temperatures. The safety was revised to a 3-position safety allowing the bolt to be cycled with a locked trigger.
It is a true sniper in every sense of the word and able to engage targets effectively at great distance. Being a military sniper, it was designed to be able to produce effective hits on the first shot with a cold bore, warm bore, and fouled bore. From the factory, it is also capable of .5 MOA accuracy. The family has expanded and the Magnum variant, the AWM, is used to make up the British L115A3 sniper system which was used to make one of the longest confirmed kills in history at 2,707 yards…there’s that “great distance” I was talking about. The Arctic Warface has an impressive resume and has been a great military sniper, collectors rifle, and has also made apperances in movies and video games.
This rifle has been re-barrreled by Wade Stuteville of Stutevill Precision in 2018. According to our consignor this barrel has less than 500 rounds through it of quality Hornady ammunition. If you’ve been wanting to ring steel at long range, this is a great choice, all you need is a scope and ammo. Please see our photos and good luck!
Some are hot, some are not, but thankfully most can be shot!
