Our Assessment: The Uberti Model 1873 Long Range Deluxe is a modern interpretation of one of the most storied repeating rifle designs of the American frontier, capturing both the mechanical heritage and visual appeal of the original Winchester pattern. The Model 1873 became widely known for its smooth toggle-link action and rapid follow-up capability, and this Long Range Deluxe variant builds on that legacy with a 30″ octagon barrel intended to maximize sight radius and ballistic efficiency. Chambered in .44-40 WCF, a cartridge introduced in the 1870s and long associated with both rifles and revolvers, the rifle reflects a classic pairing that defined late 19th century sporting arms.
This example is configured with both traditional and enhanced sighting options, including a semi-buckhorn rear sight and an adjustable tang-mounted peep sight, allowing for more precise shooting at extended distances. The long octagon barrel contributes to a steady hold and deliberate shooting rhythm, characteristic of long-range lever rifles of the period. The metal finish remains strong at approximately 95% with only light handling wear, while the bore is bright with sharp rifling and minimal fouling, supporting the rifle’s overall mechanical integrity. The walnut stocks display notable wear, including cracks at the toe and upper tang, along with scattered handling marks and a blemish in the checkering, which impact overall condition but do not obscure the rifle’s configuration and presence.
Altogether, this rifle presents as a visually striking and purpose-driven long-barrel lever action that blends historical design with modern manufacture. The extended barrel and tang sight arrangement evoke the long-range shooting traditions of the late 1800s, while the strong bore and retained finish support continued use. Despite the stock condition, the rifle retains its core character as a long-range sporting lever gun and stands as a compelling example of Uberti’s commitment to recreating classic American firearm designs.
