Stock Configuration & Condition: The stocks are a two-piece walnut set with a checkered forend that tapers at the rear,  a checkered pistol grip, a straight comb and a ventilated red rubber recoil pad. The stocks have a few scattered minor compressions and handling marks. There is a hairline crack on the left rear of the forend and a small gouge on the right rear of the forend. Notably, there is a splice in the belly of the buttstock.  The checkering is well defined, and generally sharp with a few small compressions. The LOP measures 14 1/2? from the front of the trigger to the back of the pad, and 13 1/2? to the back of the wood. The pad is still supple with minor wear. The stocks are in about Very Good Plus overall condition, as spliced.

Type of Finish: Blue & Case Color

Finish Originality: Original.

Bore Condition: The bore is bright. There is no erosion in the bore, but there is s bit of stubborn fouling. In this writer’s opinion, this bore rates a 9 out of 10.

Overall Condition: This shotgun retains about 93% of its current metal finish. The barrel has handling and storage marks, scuffs and scattered draglines.  The receiver’s case color is muted with some scattered spots of light brown patina, but the engraving is still well defined.  The guard and controls show handling wear. The screw heads are sharp.  The markings are clear with good detail in the engraving. Overall, this shotgun rates in about Very Good Plus condition.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly including the ejector. The barrel locks up tightly to the receiver with no play. There is a switch on the left of the receiver which allows the lever to be closed while disassembled for storage and transport. We have not fired this shotgun. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.

Box, Paperwork & Accessories: None.

Our Assessment: Ansley H. Fox has a well deserved reputation for making “The Finest Gun in the World”, producing beautiful and extremely high quality guns for the American sporting market, but also putting his efforts to use making automobile parts, machine guns and munitions. One of the rarest of the Foxes is the Single Trap Gun, with fewer than 600 made between 1919 and 1936 when production ceased. This shotgun is in Very Good Plus condition and is a wonderful find for the Fox collector and would make a fantastic addition to any collection. Please see our photos and good luck!

As Always,

Keep Your Powder Dry and Bid High!
