Our Assessment: The Winchester Model 1892 was designed by John Browning as a compact, exceptionally strong successor to Winchester’s earlier Model 1873. Chambered for the popular pistol-length cartridges of the period, the Model 1892 became one of Winchester’s classic lever actions and earned a lasting reputation for its smooth handling and robust locking system. This example is chambered in .38 W.C.F., better known today as the .38-40 Winchester, and is particularly desirable in its 24″ round-barrel takedown configuration. The takedown system allowed the barrel and magazine assembly to be separated from the receiver and buttstock assembly for easier transport and maintenance.
This rifle retains an attractive, honest appearance with approximately 30% of its original finish remaining and the balance developing patina and finish loss. Of particular note, the bore remains bright with well-defined rifling and rates 8/10 in this writer’s opinion, quite respectable for a rifle of this age. The action functions correctly, and the combination of its takedown configuration, .38 W.C.F. chambering, 24″ round barrel, and classic Winchester lines makes this a handsome example of the Model 1892. Overall, the rifle rates in Very Good condition as a C&R. Please see our photos for a better understanding of the condition and good luck with your bids!-C.M.
