Our Assessment: The Winchester Model 1894 is one of the most enduring lever-action rifle designs in American firearms history. Introduced in 1894 and designed by John Moses Browning, it became especially closely associated with Winchester’s smokeless-powder sporting cartridges. The .38-55 Winchester predates the Model 1894 and was one of the rifle’s important early chamberings, offering a heavy bullet and substantial performance for hunting. This 1900-production example is configured as the classic Saddle Ring Carbine with a 20″ barrel, straight-grip stock, ladder rear sight, and crescent steel buttplate.
This carbine remains in Good overall condition, retaining approximately 45% of its original finish with the balance showing honest finish loss, handling and operational wear, and an aged patina. The stocks remain Very Good with scattered compression marks. The bore is semi-bright with well-defined rifling, along with light erosion and light pitting throughout, and the action functions correctly. Early Model 1894 carbines in .38-55 retain strong collector interest, particularly examples that preserve their period carbine configuration and substantial original character.
