Our Assessment: This Winchester Model 1892 was manufactured in 1902 and is chambered in .38 W.C.F., better known today as the .38-40 Winchester. Designed by John Moses Browning as a smaller, lighter companion to the Model 1886, the Model 1892 replaced the older toggle-link Model 1873 in Winchester’s pistol-caliber rifle line. Its compact locking system proved strong, smooth, and reliable, helping make the Model 1892 one of Winchester’s most enduring lever-action designs. This example has the classic rifle configuration with a 24” octagonal barrel, full-length magazine, straight-grip stocks, and crescent steel buttplate.

The rifle retains about 30% of its original finish, with the balance showing finish loss, patina, and freckling throughout. The bore remains semi-bright with well-defined rifling, though erosion and light oxidation are present throughout, rating approximately 6/10 in the writer’s opinion. The action functions correctly. This is a classic early Winchester Model 1892 in the traditional .38 W.C.F. chambering and full-size octagon-barrel rifle configuration. Please see our photos for a better understanding of the condition and good luck with your bids!-C.M.
