Our Assessment: The American long rifle, often called the Pennsylvania or Kentucky rifle, developed into one of the most recognizable forms of early American sporting firearm, distinguished by its exceptionally long barrel, slender full-length stock, and often elaborate brass furniture. This .50-caliber example follows that traditional form with a 41.5″ barrel, maple full stock, cheekpiece, brass patchbox and crescent buttplate, fixed open sights, and double-set triggers. With no identified maker or documented manufacture date, it is best described as a Pennsylvania-style long rifle rather than definitively attributed to a particular historical school or period.
This rifle retains approximately 85% of its browned finish with scratches, thinning along the leading edges, developing surface rust on the sideplate, cock, and frizzen, and light corrosion pitting toward the rear of the barrel. The maple stock remains in Good condition with scratches and compression marks, along with a crack at the left side of the toe but no chips. The bore is semi-bright with well-defined rifling and moderate erosion, rating 5/10 in this writer’s opinion. The lock holds correctly at both half and full cock, the touch hole is clear, and the action functions correctly, though we did not fire this rifle. A flint is included.
