Our Assessment: This SIG Sauer P220 R5 Hunter is a hunting-specific version of the P220 designed around the demands of carrying a powerful sidearm in the field. Chambered in 10mm Auto and fitted with a 5-inch barrel, it provides the combination of cartridge performance and sight radius desirable in a hunting handgun, while the single-action trigger offers a clean, predictable break for deliberate shots. The ambidextrous manual safety complements the single-action system, allowing the pistol to be carried in a ready condition while providing an additional measure of safety. G10 grips offer a secure grip in wet or cold conditions, and the Kryptek camouflage finish helps the pistol blend naturally into a hunting environment rather than standing out against surrounding terrain.
The sighting equipment is particularly well suited to a hunting sidearm. The TruGlo front sight uses a green fiber-optic element to provide a highly visible aiming reference in daylight, while the tritium lamp remains visible as ambient light fades, covering the changing conditions commonly encountered during a hunt. The substantial P220 frame also gives the shooter a stable platform for the 10mm cartridge, while the longer barrel makes the pistol more practical for deliberate field shooting than a compact defensive configuration. Altogether, the R5 Hunter is purposefully configured as a field sidearm, with its 10mm chambering, extended barrel, weather-resistant grip material, camouflage finish, and versatile sighting system each serving a practical role in hunting use.
