Markings: The left side of the barrel is marked “300 H&H / MAG”. The left side of the receiver is marked with the serial number and “DAKOTA ARMS / 97 / STURGIS, SD”. The top of the receiver is marked “HUNTER”.

Sights / Optics: There are no provisions for iron sights. The top of the receiver is mounted with a two-piece base and 1″ Talley rings for optics.
Stock Configuration & Condition: The stock is a one-piece composite stock, with a semi-pistol grip, fluted straight comb, black rubber Old English Pachmayr buttpad, and sling studs front and rear. The LOP measures 13 1/2″ from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttpad. The stock shows no notable wear. The stock’s finish is intact. The stock fits tightly to the barreled action, with no play. There are no chips or cracks. The barrel is free-floating all the way to the action. Overall, the stock rates in Excellent condition.

Bore Condition: The bore is bright with sharp rifling. There is no erosion in the bore. In this writer’s opinion, the bore rates 10/10.
Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 96% of its original metal finish. The balance of the finish shows light handling wear, with a few light scratches scattered throughout all of the metal surfaces. The bolt shows some operational marks. The stainless finish is intact, otherwise. The markings are clear and legible. The screw heads are sharp. Overall, this rifle rates in Fine condition.
Mechanics: The action functions correctly, as does the safety. The trigger has a light, crisp, and clean break. We did not fire this rifle, but we did perform a mechanic’s check. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.

Our Assessment: The Dakota Arms Model 97 Hunter is a premium American-made bolt-action sporting rifle built for serious hunting, combining Dakota’s refined Model 97 action with lightweight synthetic furniture and traditional controlled hunting-rifle ergonomics. Chambered in the classic .300 H&H Magnum and fitted with a 26″ stainless barrel, this example is well suited for elk, moose, bear, and other large game where the cartridge’s smooth feeding, excellent sectional density, and proven long-range performance are desirable. The free-floated barrel, Talley rings, and crisp trigger further reinforce the rifle’s purpose as a high-quality field rifle.
This rifle is in Fine condition overall, retaining about 96% of its original stainless finish with scattered light scratches and operational marks on the bolt. The composite stock remains in Excellent condition with an intact finish, a tight fit to the barreled action, and no chips or cracks. The bore is bright with sharp rifling and no erosion, rating 10/10, while the action and safety function correctly and the trigger has a light, crisp, clean break. It includes a two-piece scope base and 1″ Talley rings, making this a well-equipped and attractive example of Dakota’s Model 97 Hunter.
