Mechanics: The action functions correctly. This pistol has a smooth double action trigger pull. We did not fire this handgun. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards. There is no magazine disconnect on this pistol. This pistol has a frame-mounted decocker. There is a recall on the Model 1076’s in regards to the decocker failing. The two dot punches under the decocker level shows that this error was corrected.
Box, Paperwork & Accessories: 3x 9-round magazines in Fine condition and S&W Factory letter.
Our Assessment: The FBI specified a 10mm service pistol with a 4.25″ barrel and frame-mounted decocking lever, leading Smith & Wesson to develop the 1076 around its exceptionally robust stainless-steel 1000-series platform. This particular pistol has unusually strong documented institutional provenance. According to its Smith & Wesson Factory Letter, it was shipped to the State of Minnesota on September 10, 1990 as an example of the new FBI model, returned to Smith & Wesson one week later, shipped to the FBI Firearms Unit on January 28, 1991, returned to Smith & Wesson on June 3, 1992, reconditioned, and ultimately sold commercially on December 28, 1993. That documented movement between Smith & Wesson, a state agency, and the FBI Firearms Unit gives this 1076 considerably greater historical interest than a typical commercial example.
This 1076 remains in Fine-Excellent condition following its documented Smith & Wesson factory reconditioning, with scattered handling scuffs on the satin stainless surfaces and normal operational wear. The one-piece checkered Xenoy grip remains in Excellent condition with no chips or cracks, while the bright 9/10 bore retains sharp rifling despite stubborn fouling. The factory frame-mounted decocker, bobbed hammer, fixed tritium three-dot sights, and three nine-round magazines complete the characteristic FBI-pattern configuration, with the tritium inserts now expired as expected from their age. Mechanically, the pistol functions correctly with a smooth double-action trigger pull. Most importantly, the included Smith & Wesson Factory Letter establishes an unusually detailed history extending from the pistol’s initial use as an agency demonstration example through its time with the FBI Firearms Unit, subsequent factory reconditioning, and eventual commercial sale.
