Our Assessment: The Schuerman Arms SA40 is an unusual American-made bolt-action sporting rifle produced by Schuerman Arms, Ltd. of Desert Hills, Arizona, to provide an American made rifle with a more European feel, as the action is reminiscent of the J.P. Sauer Model 100. Far less commonly encountered than rifles from the major commercial manufacturers, the SA40 was designed as a premium hunting rifle with a stainless barreled action, synthetic stock, hinged floorplate, and proprietary action. Chambered in .35 Whelen with a 22″ barrel, this example is particularly well suited for elk, moose, bear, and other large North American game. The .35 Whelen, developed by necking the .30-06 Springfield case up to .358 caliber, has long been respected for delivering substantial bullet weight and terminal performance without requiring a belted magnum cartridge.
This rifle is in Fine condition overall, retaining about 96% of its original stainless finish with only minor hairline scratches and superficial imperfections on the barrel. The composite stock remains in Fine to Excellent condition with only a minor ding at the front of the wrist, an otherwise intact finish, and no chips or cracks. The bore is bright with sharp rifling and no erosion, rating 10/10, while the action and safety function correctly. The trigger has a crisp, clean break with minimal takeup and overtravel. It includes its owner’s manual, action-screw Allen wrench, and two-piece scope base. Its uncommon Schuerman Arms manufacture, low serial number, and classic .35 Whelen chambering make this a particularly interesting rifle for the hunter or collector who appreciates lesser-known American sporting arms.
