Our Assessment: The German P.08 Luger was one of the principal German military sidearms of the first half of the 20th century, distinguished by its short-recoil, toggle-locked action, striker-fired mechanism, and unmistakable grip profile. Mauser manufactured this example in 1939 under the “42” maker code, which replaced the earlier “S/42” marking during that year’s production. Serial number 7177u falls within the later 1939 suffix sequence appropriate for a 42-code pistol. The serialized components are matching, although the firing pin has been force matched, indicating later efforts to match that component to the pistol rather than original factory numbering.
This pistol retains approximately 96% of its refinished blue finish with light scratches, thinning along the leading edges, and normal operational wear. The checkered walnut grips remain in Very Good condition with light handling wear, scratches, compression marks, and a few chipped checkering peaks but no cracks. The bore is bright with defined rifling, faint erosion, and light fouling in the grooves, rating 7.5/10 in this writer’s opinion. The action functions correctly with barely perceptible play between the barrel assembly and frame, though we did not fire this pistol. Two 8-round magazines, a takedown tool, and custom box are included. Please see our photos for a better understanding of the condition and good luck with your bids! -N.P
