Our Assessment: The Smith & Wesson Model 58 was introduced on July 10, 1964 as the service-oriented companion to the deluxe Model 57 and as the principal law-enforcement platform for the newly developed .41 Remington Magnum cartridge. Built on Smith & Wesson’s large N-frame, the Model 58 dispensed with the Model 57’s adjustable target sights and premium appointments in favor of a 4″ heavy barrel, fixed sights, and straightforward duty-gun configuration. The .41 Magnum concept had been promoted by authorities including Elmer Keith and Bill Jordan as a police cartridge offering greater power than the .357 Magnum while remaining more manageable than the .44 Magnum, and Remington offered a reduced-velocity 210-grain police load alongside its full-power hunting ammunition. Several law-enforcement agencies adopted the Model 58, with the San Francisco Police Department reportedly among the largest users of the revolver. The “S.F.P.D.” marking on this example therefore gives it a particularly interesting association with the Model 58’s original purpose as a dedicated .41 Magnum police service revolver.
This early Model 58 retains approximately 95% of its original blue finish with only minor muzzle and frame-edge wear, scattered handling scratches, localized oxidation freckling, and a more noticeable scratch on the left side of the barrel. The checkered Goncalo Alves target stocks remain in Very Good-Fine condition with no chips or cracks, while the bright 9/10 bore retains sharp rifling and shows no erosion. Mechanically, the revolver is equally strong, with tight lockup, minimal play at each chamber, a smooth double-action pull, and a crisp single-action release. The combination of early S-prefix production, strong original finish, excellent bore and mechanics, and the engraved “S.F.P.D.” marking makes this a particularly interesting example of Smith & Wesson’s purpose-built .41 Magnum service revolver.
