Stock Configuration & Condition: The stocks are a two-piece checkered, gloss-finished walnut stock set, with a semi-pistol grip, fluted straight comb, black rubber Browning buttpad, and sling studs front and rear. The LOP measures 13 3/4″ from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttpad. The forend does have a 2 3/4″ long crack coming from the bottom and up the left side of the forend, into the checkering. Otherwise, the stock’s finish is intact, and the checkering is well defined. The stocks fit tightly to the frame, with no play. Overall, the stocks rate in Fair to Good condition, due to the crack. The the crack was not present, the stocks would rate considerably higher.
Magazine Quantity & Condition: 1x 3rd factory magazine, in Excellent condition.
Type of Finish: Blued
Finish Originality: Original
Bore Condition: The bore is bright with sharp rifling. There is no erosion in the bore, but there is some fouling present. In this writer’s opinion, the bore rates 9.75/10.
Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 98% of its original metal finish. The balance of the finish shows light handling wear, with minor superficial imperfections throughout the metal surfaces. The bluing is deep, dark, and intact throughout. The markings are clear and legible. The pins are unmarred. Overall, this rifle rates in Very Good condition, still due to the crack in the forend.
Mechanics: The action functions correctly, as does the safety. We did not fire this rifle, but we did perform a mechanic’s check. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.
Box, Paperwork & Accessories: This rifle comes with the magazine and scope base/rings as mentioned above.
Our Assessment: The Browning BAR Mark II Safari is a refined gas-operated sporting rifle that combines Belgian manufacture and Portuguese assembly with traditional walnut furniture, an engraved receiver, and a detachable magazine. Chambered in .300 Winchester Magnum, this example pairs a 22″ barrel with Browning’s BOSS system, which allows the shooter to tune barrel harmonics for a particular load while also providing recoil-reduction characteristics. The combination of the powerful .300 Winchester Magnum cartridge, semi-automatic action, and classic Safari configuration makes this a capable hunting rifle for elk, moose, and other large game.
This rifle is in Very Good condition overall, retaining about 98% of its original blue finish with only minor superficial handling marks. The primary condition issue is a 2 3/4″ crack in the forend that extends upward from the bottom and into the checkering, causing the stocks to rate in Fair to Good condition despite their otherwise strong finish and well-defined checkering. The bore is bright with sharp rifling and some fouling, rating 9.75/10, while the action and safety function correctly. It includes an Excellent-condition factory three-round magazine along with the installed scope base and 1″ rings.
