Our Assessment: Smith & Wesson introduced the Model 4506 in 1988 as part of its new Third Generation semi-automatic pistol line. Chambered in .45 ACP, the 4506 was the full-size stainless successor to the Second Generation Model 645 and retained Smith & Wesson’s traditional DA/SA operating system, slide-mounted ambidextrous safety/decocker, and magazine-disconnect safety. Its rugged stainless-steel construction and service-pistol configuration made the 4506 one of the most recognizable large-frame S&W autoloaders of the late 1980s and 1990s, and the model has developed a following among collectors of the company’s discontinued metal-frame semi-automatics.
This 1988 example, serial number TCF8668, retains about 97% of its original matte stainless finish with only light handling and operational wear. The wraparound polymer grip remains in Very Good condition, the bore rates 9.5/10 with sharp rifling and only stubborn fouling, and the action functions correctly. Accompanied by one 8-round magazine, this is an attractive first-year-production example of Smith & Wesson’s classic full-size .45 ACP Third Generation service pistol.
