Our Assessment: The Smith & Wesson Model 63 was introduced in 1977 as the stainless-steel counterpart to the company’s .22/32 Kit Gun, continuing a long tradition of compact rimfire revolvers intended for hiking, camping, small-game hunting, and general outdoor use. Built on Smith & Wesson’s J-frame, the Model 63 combined six-shot .22 Long Rifle capacity with adjustable sights and corrosion-resistant stainless construction. The Model 63-3 was introduced in 1989 and represented a later evolution of the original six-shot Kit Gun, with the compact 2″ version providing an especially handy variation. By the mid-1990s, Smith & Wesson was commonly fitting these revolvers with practical rubber grips, making this circa-1996 example representative of the final years of the traditional six-shot Model 63 before subsequent changes to the line.
This Model 63-3 remains an attractive example, with its stainless surfaces showing only light handling scratches, scuffs, minor frosting on the barrel, operational wear, and a cylinder turn line. The Uncle Mike’s rubber grips remain in Fine condition with only minor handling wear and no cuts or tears, while the bright 9.5/10 bore retains sharp rifling with no erosion. Its compact 2″ barrel, red-insert front sight, micrometer-adjustable rear sight, and six-shot J-frame configuration make this a particularly useful and desirable variation of the classic Kit Gun. Mechanically, the revolver remains excellent, with a smooth double-action pull, crisp single-action release, and tight lockup showing no perceptible play at each chamber.
