Sights / Optics: The front sight is a fixed blade mounted at the muzzle end of the tube. The rear sight is an M79-style folding ladder sight with range graduations. The right-side base screw for the ladder sight is missing and should be easily replaceable.
Stock Configuration & Condition: The furniture is two-piece smooth walnut with a short forend, semi-pistol grip buttstock, straight comb, and rubber recoil pad. The stocks show only light handling wear. There is a small crack in the bottom of the grip between the stock screw and end of the lower tang. There are no chips or cracks. The recoil pad remains soft and supple. The right side of the buttstock is personally signed “Clint Smith 2026”. The stocks are in Good condition.
Finish / Condition: The metal retains about 98% of its matte black/gray finish. There is light handling and operational wear with no notable finish loss or significant defects. The right side of the tube has a hand-applied white “37 MM” marking. The ladder sight is missing its right-side base screw as noted above. Overall, the launcher is in Excellent condition.
Bore Condition: The 37mm smoothbore tube is gray and smooth with no significant wear. In this writer’s opinion, the bore rates 9/10.
Mechanics: The action functions properly.
Box, Paperwork & Accessories: This launcher comes with an olive-drab web sling.
Our Assessment: Spike’s Tactical developed the ST Thumper as a full-size steel-and-wood 37mm homage to the famous U.S. M79 grenade launcher. Its name comes directly from one of the best-known nicknames applied to the M79, the single-shot 40mm launcher that became an icon of the Vietnam War. The ST Thumper captures the unmistakable profile of the military M79 with its break-open action, wooden stock and forend, short smoothbore tube, and folding ladder sight, while being chambered for 37mm rather than 40mm.
This particular ST Thumper comes directly to us from the personal collection of Clint Smith, founder of Thunder Ranch, and the right side of its stock is personally signed “Clint Smith 2026”. Smith served as a U.S. Marine with two infantry and Combined Action Platoon tours in Vietnam before going on to a distinguished career in law enforcement and professional firearms training. While there is no representation that Smith used an M79 during his military service, the Vietnam-era character of the ST Thumper makes it an especially fitting piece from his collection. With direct Clint Smith provenance, his signature on the stock, its distinctive M79 configuration, and excellent overall condition, this is a memorable Thunder Ranch collectible and an unusual opportunity to acquire a personally owned piece from one of the most influential American firearms instructors of the modern era.
