Markings: The left side of the barrel is marked “COLT SINGLE ACTION ARMY .45”. The top of the barrel is marked “COLT’S PT. F.A. MFG. Co. HARTFORD, CT. U.S.A.”. The left side of the frame is marked “PAT. SEPT. 19, 1871” / “JULY 2, 72 JAN. 19, 75”. The bottom of the frame, interior frontstrap, and interior backstrap are marked with “94066SA”. The interior of the front strap at the bottom is marked “COLT ENG”. The front of the cylinder is marked with “4066”. The interior of the grip panels are scribed with the matching serial number. This revolver has a Class C factory floral engraving covering approximately 75% of the surface.

Barrel Length: 7.5”

Sights / Optics: The front sight is a quarter round blade fixed to the barrel. The rear sight is a square groove in the top strap which is visible when fully cocked.

Stock Configuration & Condition: The grips are two-piece black checkered panels with eagle and shield motif and Rampant Colt logo at the top. There is light handling wear and a scratch on the bottom of the left grip panel. The checkering remains sharp and defined. There are no chips or cracks. Overall, the grips are in Excellent condition.

Type of Finish: Blued, Case-colored

Finish Originality: Original

Bore Condition: The bore is bright and the rifling is sharp. There is light fouling in the grooves. There is no erosion in the bore. In this writer’s opinion the bore rates 9.5/10.

Overall Condition: This revolver retains about 98% of its metal finish. There are light handling scratches. There is very minor thinning along the barrel. There is a faint turn line on the cylinder. There are carbon rings on the face of the cylinder. The screw heads are sharp. The markings are clear. Overall, this revolver is in Excellent condition.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly and smoothly. The lockup is tight at each chamber with no play. We did not fire this revolver. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.

Our Assessment: The Colt Single Action Army was introduced in 1873 and became one of the most recognizable revolvers in American history, serving military, law-enforcement, ranching, and civilian users throughout the late 19th century. Third Generation production began in 1976, preserving the traditional fixed sights, side loading gate, manual ejector, and four-click single-action mechanism while incorporating modern production methods. Colt’s factory engraving program offered several levels of ornamentation, with Class C engraving providing extensive floral-scroll coverage over approximately 75% of the revolver’s surface. This 1978 example is documented by a Colt Factory Letter as factory Class C engraved and was shipped to Pacific International in Sacramento, California, as one of six revolvers in the shipment with this configuration. Its documented engraving, early Third Generation production, 7 1/2″ barrel, .45 Colt chambering, and ATF-designated C&R status give it considerably greater collector significance than a standard-production Single Action Army.

This factory-engraved revolver retains approximately 98% of its original blue and case-colored finish, with only light handling scratches, very minor barrel thinning, a faint cylinder turn line, and carbon rings on the cylinder face. The black eagle-and-shield grips remain in Excellent condition, while the bright 9.5/10 bore has sharp rifling with only light fouling. The action functions smoothly with tight lockup and no perceptible play at each chamber. The included Colt Custom Shop presentation case and factory letter confirming the Class C engraving and shipment details make this an especially desirable and well-documented Colt collectible.
