Markings: The left side of the barrel is marked “.45 Colt”. The right side of the barrel is marked “Mountain Gun”. The crane cut is marked “CAP4449” / “M625-6”. The right side of the frame is marked with a large S&W monogram and the four-line Marcas Registradas. The grip butt is marked “CAP4449”.

Sights / Optics: The front sight is a serrated ramped blade pinned to a ramped rib. The rear sight is a flat-top square notch leaf in a micrometer click base and is adjustable for elevation and windage. The rear sight tang and the rib are serrated, and the topstrap has a matte finish for glare reduction.
Stock Configuration & Condition: The stocks are two-piece smooth target-style hardwood with speedloader cutout. There are minor handling marks and compressions. The right panel escutcheon has been plugged. These stocks are not original to this revolver. There are no chips or cracks. Overall, these stocks are in about Fine condition.

Bore Condition: The bore is bright and the rifling is sharp. There is fouling in the grooves. There is no erosion in the bore. In this writer’s opinion the bore rates 9/10.
Overall Condition: This revolver’s stainless finish shows minor scratches, scuffs, and compression marks. There is light frosting on the barrel. There is a turn line on the cylinder and carbon rings on its face. The markings are clear. Overall this revolver is in Fine condition.
Mechanics: The action functions correctly. The lockup is tight with minor play at each chamber. The double-action trigger is light and smooth and the single-action is light and crisp. We did not fire this handgun. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.

Our Assessment: The Smith & Wesson Model 625 is the stainless-steel evolution of the company’s large-frame .45-caliber revolver family, built on the robust N-frame and offered in several target, sporting, and field configurations. The Mountain Gun variant was developed as a lighter, handier big-bore revolver, using a tapered 4″ barrel profile to reduce weight while retaining the strength and handling characteristics of the N-frame. Chambered in .45 Colt, this 1996 Model 625-6 combines a traditional six-shot cylinder, adjustable sights, and stainless construction with the portability that made the Mountain Gun especially appealing for field carry and outdoors use. Provenance to the John Taffin Collection adds meaningful collector interest given Taffin’s extensive writing on big-bore revolvers and the .45 Colt cartridge.
This Model 625-6 remains in Fine condition, with minor scratches, scuffs, compression marks, light frosting on the barrel, a cylinder turn line, and carbon rings on the cylinder face. The replacement smooth hardwood target-style stocks also remain in Fine condition, while the bright 9/10 bore has sharp rifling, fouling in the grooves, and no visible erosion. The action functions correctly with tight lockup, minor play at each chamber, a light and smooth double-action pull, and a light, crisp single-action pull.
