Sights / Optics: The front sight is a blade slotted and pinned to a base that is fixed to the front of the barrel. The rear sight has been removed and the dovetail plugged. There is a Lyman side mount receiver sight installed on this rifle.
Stock Configuration & Condition: The stocks are two-piece smooth walnut with a schnabel-tip forend with triangular ebony inlay, straight grip, straight comb and steel crescent buttplate. The LOP is 13″ from trigger to buttplate. The stock has been refinished. There are scratches and compression dents throughout. There is some oil darkening at the wrist. There is a small crack at the bottom corner of the wrist. Overall this stock is in Good condition as refinished.

Finish Originality: Original with cold blue touch ups.
Bore Condition: The bore is gray. The rifling is defined. There is some moderate erosion and pitting, mostly in the grooves. In this writer’s opinion this bore rates 6/10.
Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 75% of its original finish. There is handling and operational wear. The barrel has had some cold blue touch ups. There are scratches and corrosion stains throughout. The screw heads are lightly tooled but serviceable. The markings are clear. Overall this rifle is in Good condition.
Mechanics: The action functions correctly. The hammer has a half-cock safety. The lever lock-up is good and the trigger is crisp. We did not fire this rifle. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.

Our Assessment: The Winchester Model 1895 is one of John M. Browning’s most distinctive lever-action designs, departing from the tubular-magazine format of earlier Winchesters in favor of a strong internal box magazine suitable for pointed bullets. This 1898 antique example is chambered in .30-40 Krag and features a 28″ round barrel, straight-grip walnut stocks, crescent steel buttplate, and a Lyman side-mounted receiver sight in place of the original rear sight. Its early production date and classic long-rifle configuration give it strong appeal among collectors of antique Winchester sporting rifles.
Introduced in 1895, the Model 1895 was designed to handle the more powerful smokeless-powder military and sporting cartridges coming into use at the end of the 19th century. The box magazine allowed safe use of pointed bullets and helped make the rifle suitable for cartridges such as the .30-40 Krag, .303 British, .30-06, and .405 Winchester. The .30-40 Krag chambering reflects the rifle’s close connection to the transition from black powder to modern smokeless sporting cartridges and remains an important part of the Model 1895’s early history.
