Sights / Optics: The front sight is a flattened silver bead fixed at the front of the barrel. The top of the receiver is serrated for glare reduction.
Stock Configuration & Condition: The refinished stocks are two-piece walnut with a 14-groove slide handle with a flat bottom, smooth semi-pistol grip, fluted straight comb, and a checkered Winchester buttplate. There are scattered compression marks and scratches throughout. The LOP measures 13 7/8″ from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttplate. There are no cracks. Overall, the stocks rate in Very Good condition.

Bore Condition: The bore is bright. There is fouling present in the bore. There is no erosion in the bore. In this writer’s opinion, the bore rates 9/10.
Overall Condition: This shotgun retains about 96% of its metal finish. There is minor finish loss at the muzzle with thinning along the barrel and magazine tube. There are scattered scratches, scuffs, and light compression marks. The action and magazine tube show operational wear. There is light oxidation on the receiver. There is dried varnish on the right side of the receiver. The screw heads are sharp. Overall, this shotgun rates in about Very Good condition.
Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We have not fired this shotgun. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.

Our Assessment: Introduced in 1933, the Winchester Model 42 was designed by William Roemer as a scaled-down slide-action shotgun chambered exclusively for the .410 bore and patterned closely after Winchester’s highly successful Model 12. Produced through 1963 with approximately 160,000 manufactured, the Model 42 was offered in several grades and configurations and developed an enduring reputation for its excellent handling qualities and exceptionally trim proportions. Serial number 62046 falls within 1947 production, placing this shotgun among the early post-World War II Model 42s; Winchester’s serial data shows 1946 ending at 54256 and 1947 ending at 64853. Its 26″ Full-choke barrel and plain sporting configuration are representative of the classic field Model 42.
This example retains approximately 96% of its original metal finish with relatively modest wear consisting primarily of thinning, scattered handling marks, operational wear, light oxidation, and the noted dried varnish on the receiver. The refinished walnut stocks remain structurally sound and present well, while the bright 9/10 bore and correctly functioning action are particularly favorable attributes. Although the refinished furniture prevents the shotgun from being considered completely original, the strong remaining factory metal finish, clean bore, and generally well-preserved condition make this an attractive postwar Model 42 with plenty of collector and sporting appeal.
