Markings: The left side of the barrel is marked “-WINCHESTER” / “TRADE MARK” / -MODEL 42-410-3 IN. CHAM-” / “MADE IN U.S.A.-WINCHESTER PROOF STEEL-” / “FULL”. The bottom of the receiver and receiver extension are marked “152096”.

Sights / Optics: The front sight is a flattened silver bead fixed at the front of the barrel. The top of the receiver is serrated for glare reduction.
Stock Configuration & Condition: The refinished stocks are two-piece walnut with a 14-groove slide handle with a flat bottom, smooth semi-pistol grip, fluted straight comb, and a checkered Winchester buttplate. There are scattered compression marks and scratches throughout. There are tiny chips on the right side of the slide handle. The LOP measures 13 7/8″ from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttplate. There are no cracks. Overall, the stocks rate in Very Good condition.

Bore Condition: The bore is bright. There is no erosion in the bore. In this writer’s opinion, the bore rates 9/10.
Overall Condition: This shotgun retains about 93% of its metal finish. There is finish loss at the muzzle and the leading edges of the receiver and receiver extension. There is thinning along the barrel, magazine tube, and the receiver. The receiver has a plum tone. There is operational wear along the action, action bar, and the barrel. There are scattered scratches and compressions. The screw heads are mostly sharp, the markings are clear. Overall, this shotgun rates in about Very Good condition.
Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We have not fired this shotgun. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance standards.

Our Assessment: Introduced in 1933, the Winchester Model 42 was designed by William Roemer as Winchester’s small-frame slide-action shotgun chambered exclusively for the .410 bore. Closely associated with the handling qualities and mechanical refinement of the larger Model 12, the Model 42 was produced through 1963 and has become one of Winchester’s most desirable small-bore repeating shotguns, with approximately 160,000 manufactured in a variety of Field, Skeet, Trap, Deluxe, and other configurations. This example’s 26″ barrel, fixed Full choke, plain barrel, and takedown arrangement are characteristic of a traditional sporting Model 42.
This shotgun retains approximately 93% of its original metal finish, showing honest edge wear, thinning, operational marks, scattered scratches, and the noted plum coloration to the receiver. The refinished walnut stocks remain in Very Good condition with only scattered handling marks and tiny chips to the slide handle, though the refinish detracts somewhat from overall originality. The bright 9/10 bore, clear markings, and correctly functioning action are all strong attributes. Altogether, this is an attractive and well-preserved shooter-grade Model 42 that retains considerable collector appeal despite the refinished wood.
