Sights / Optics: The front sight is a blade dovetailed into the barrel. The rear sight is a folding ladder style sliding V notch that is dovetailed into the barrel. 

Stock Configuration & Condition: The stock is two piece smooth walnut, banded forend, straight grip, straight comb, and carbine style steel buttplate. The LOP is 12 3/4″ from trigger to buttplate. There are scratches and compression dents throughout. There are a couple more notable gouges on the forend. There are some adhesive stains on the forend. There are no chips or cracks. Overall this stock is in Good condition.

Finish Originality: Original 

Bore Condition: The bore is bright. The rifling is sharp. There are a few spots of minor corrosion. There is some fouling. In this writer’s opinion this bore rates 9/10.

Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 80% of its original blued finish. There are scratches and light corrosion stains scattered throughout. There are a few spots of adhesive staining on the receiver. There is handling and operational wear. The screw heads are lightly tooled but serviceable. The markings are clear. Overall this rifle is in Good condition. 

Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We did not fire this rifle. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.

Our Assessment: The Garate Anitua Tigre is a Spanish-made lever-action rifle patterned closely after the Winchester Model 1892 and chambered in the classic .44 W.C.F. cartridge. This example features a 22″ barrel, full-length tubular magazine, folding ladder rear sight, and traditional carbine-style walnut furniture with steel buttplate. It is further distinguished by its provenance to noted gun writer John Taffin and is accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity from the John Taffin Estate.

Produced in Spain during the early 20th century, the Tigre was built for sporting, ranch, and law-enforcement use and became especially associated with the Guardia Civil. Its design closely followed the proven Winchester 1892 pattern, giving it the same compact proportions and fast handling that made the original so successful. Chambered in .44 W.C.F., the Tigre combined a familiar revolver cartridge with a handy repeating rifle platform, making it practical for field use while retaining strong Old West styling.

This rifle retains about 80% of its original blued finish, with scattered scratches, light corrosion staining, adhesive residue on the receiver, and normal handling and operational wear. The walnut stocks remain in Good condition with scratches, compression dents, a few deeper gouges on the forend, and additional adhesive staining but no chips or cracks. The bright bore has sharp rifling and rates 9/10 despite a few minor corrosion spots and some fouling, while the action functions correctly. Overall, this is a Good-condition Garate Anitua Tigre with desirable .44 W.C.F. chambering and notable John Taffin provenance.
