Sights / Optics: The front sight is a Redfield beaded blade dovetailed to the barrel. The rear sight is a spring leaf V notch with elevator dovetailed to the barrel. The upper tang is drilled and tapped for a peep sight. There is a folding peep sight installed on this rifle. 

Stock Configuration & Condition: The stock is two piece smooth walnut, schnabel forend tip, straight grip, straight comb, and crescent steel buttplate. The LOP is 13″ from trigger to buttplate. There are sling mounts installed. The stock has been refinished. There are scratches and compression dents throughout. There are notable compression dents on the forend about halfway down. There is chipped and worn finish throughout. There are no cracks. Overall this stock is in Good condition. 

Magazine Quantity & Condition: 4rd internal rotary magazine, with functional brass cartridge counter.

Finish Originality: Original 

Bore Condition: The bore is bright. The rifling is sharp. There is no erosion. There is minor fouling. In this writer’s opinion this bore rates 9/10.

Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 90% of its original blued finish. There is handling and operational wear. There are scratches and light corrosion stains throughout. There is worn bluing and light tool marking on the receiver. The screw heads are tooled but serviceable. The markings are clear. Overall this rifle is in Good condition.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly, as does the safety. We did not fire this rifle, but we did perform a mechanic’s check. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.

Our Assessment: The Savage Model 1899A is a classic hammerless lever-action sporting rifle built around Arthur Savage’s distinctive rotary-magazine action. This 1924 example is chambered in .30-30 Winchester and features a 26″ barrel, solid-frame receiver, functional brass cartridge counter, straight-grip walnut furniture, and a folding tang-mounted peep sight. Its full-length rifle configuration, rotary magazine, and traditional crescent buttplate give it the graceful profile associated with early Savage sporting rifles.

The Savage 1899 evolved into the Model 99 family during the early 1920s, with the “A” designation used for the standard solid-frame rifle configuration with a 26″ barrel. Savage’s rotary magazine was a major advantage over conventional tubular-magazine lever actions because it permitted the use of pointed bullets and incorporated a visible cartridge counter. Chambered in .30-30 Winchester, this rifle combines one of America’s most enduring hunting cartridges with the mechanically distinctive Savage lever-action system.

This rifle retains about 90% of its original blued finish, with handling and operational wear, scattered scratches, light corrosion staining, and some worn blue and tool marking on the receiver. The refinished walnut stocks remain in Good condition with scratches, compression dents, chipped finish, and more pronounced dents along the forend but no cracks. The bright bore has sharp rifling and rates 9/10 with only minor fouling, while the action, safety, and brass cartridge counter function correctly. Overall, this is a Good-condition Savage 1899A with a strong bore, classic solid-frame configuration, and substantial vintage sporting appeal.
