Our Assessment: The Winchester Model 1895 was John M. Browning’s final lever-action design for Winchester and one of the strongest and most advanced sporting rifles of its era. Unlike earlier Winchester lever actions, the Model 1895 utilizes a fixed box magazine, allowing the safe use of pointed bullets and powerful smokeless-powder cartridges. This 1898 antique example is chambered in .30 U.S. (.30-40 Krag) and features the desirable 28″ barrel, straight-grip walnut stocks with Schnabel forend and ebony tip, crescent steel buttplate, and a period Lyman side-mounted receiver sight.

Introduced in 1895, the Model 1895 marked Winchester’s transition into the smokeless-powder era and was offered in several military and sporting chamberings. The .30-40 Krag was the first smokeless military cartridge adopted by the U.S. Army, making it a natural choice for Winchester’s new high-strength lever action. The Model 1895 earned a reputation as an excellent hunting rifle for large North American game and also saw military service in several countries, cementing its place as one of Browning’s most historically significant lever-action designs.

This rifle has been refinished and now retains approximately 95% of its current finish, with blued-over pitting, scattered scratches, a polished-in-the-white bolt top, and the characteristic plum-colored barrel commonly seen on refinished nickel steel Winchesters. The refinished walnut stocks remain in Very Good condition with only light handling wear and no chips or cracks. The semi-bright bore retains well-defined rifling and rates 8/10 with light erosion and fine pitting, while the action functions correctly. Overall, this is a Good to Very Good refinished Model 1895 that remains an attractive example of Winchester’s classic box-magazine lever rifle.
