Markings: The left side of the barrel is marked with Remington’s address, patent numbers, “223 REM.”, the “XI” date code, and a series of proof marks. The right side of the barrel is marked with a series of proof marks. The left side of the receiver is marked with the serial number and “Remington / MODEL 700”.

Sights / Optics: There are no provisions for iron sights. The top of the receiver is mounted with a two-piece Weaver scope base for optics.
Stock Configuration & Condition: The stock is a one-piece checkered walnut stock, with a capped semi-pistol grip, fluted monte carlo comb with cheekpiece, checkered plastic buttplate, a tipped forend, and sling studs front and rear. The LOP measures 13 1/2″ from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttplate. The stock shows light handling and storage wear, with a few minor surface-level scratches and minor imperfections from being stored in its original box. The gloss finish is intact, and the checkering is well defined. The stock fits tightly to the barreled action, with no play. There are no chips or cracks. Overall, the stock rates in Fine to Excellent condition.

Bore Condition: The bore is bright with sharp rifling. There is no erosion in the bore. In this writer’s opinion, the bore rates 10/10.
Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 99% of its original metal finish. The balance of the finish shows no notable wear. The bluing is deep, dark, and intact throughout. The jeweling on the bolt is vivid and bright. The markings are clear and legible. The screw heads are lightly tooled, but retain strong and serviceable slots. Overall, this rifle rates in Fine to Excellent condition.
Mechanics: The action functions correctly, as does the safety. We did not fire this rifle, but we did perform a mechanic’s check. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.
Box, Paperwork & Accessories: This rifle comes with its original box, and the scope mount as mentioned above. There is also an ancient artifact included with this rifle – A sealed VHS tape from Remington, that provides instructions and information on “The Safe Use and Care of your New Firearm”.
Our Assessment: The Remington Model 700 BDL Varmint Special combined the proven Model 700 action with a heavy-contour barrel and traditional high-gloss sporting furniture, creating a rifle well suited for varmint hunting and precision shooting from a supported position. The BDL configuration adds upgraded walnut furniture, contrasting grip-cap and forend-tip treatments, a hinged floorplate, and polished metalwork. Chambered in .223 Remington, this 1976 example offers mild recoil, excellent practical accuracy potential, and the classic appearance associated with Remington’s earlier Model 700 production.
This rifle is in Fine to Excellent condition overall, retaining about 99% of its original blue finish with deep, even bluing and vivid bolt jeweling. The checkered walnut stock retains its gloss finish and shows only light handling and storage wear, with no chips or cracks. The bore is bright with sharp rifling and no erosion, rating 10/10, while the action and safety function correctly. The original box, two-piece Weaver scope bases, and the included sealed fossil, that is the Remington firearm safety and care VHS tape add completeness and period appeal.
