Our Assessment: The U.S. Model 1903 Springfield is one of the defining American military bolt-action rifles of the 20th century. Adopted in 1903, it served as the primary U.S. service rifle through much of the First World War and continued to see extensive military use through World War II. This example has a 1907 Springfield Armory receiver paired with an April 1944 Remington replacement barrel, reflecting the rebuilding and refurbishment commonly encountered on rifles that remained in the military system for decades. Its present configuration is especially notable for the vintage J. Unertl externally adjustable target scope. Unertl optics became highly regarded among American competitive and precision shooters, and the scope gives this Springfield the appearance and character of a period target rifle. Without documentation establishing military sniper use, this rifle is best regarded as a scoped target-configured Model 1903 rather than a documented military sniper rifle.

This rifle is in Good condition as presently configured. The two-piece hardwood stock set shows scattered scratches, compression marks, handling wear, and other signs of age and use. The metal surfaces display service wear consistent with an arsenal-reworked rifle, while the bore is gray with worn rifling. The J. Unertl scope has a thin reticle and provides a clear sight picture. The action does not function properly, and the rifle will occasionally discharge when the safety is moved to the firing position; consequently, it should not be fired until inspected and repaired by a qualified gunsmith. The combination of an early Springfield receiver, WWII-era Remington replacement barrel, and vintage Unertl target scope gives this rifle considerable character and collector interest.
