Our Assessment: This custom Mauser Standard Modell is a sporterized bolt-action hunting rifle chambered in 8x57mm Mauser and built on the strong Model 98 action. Dating from the 1930s, it features a 24″ barrel, internal box magazine, Mannlicher-style full-length walnut stock, receiver sight base, and provisions for scope mounting. Its controlled-round-feed action, classic European stock architecture, and traditional chambering give it strong appeal as a vintage sporting rifle.
The Mauser Standard Modell was introduced during the interwar period as a commercial and military-pattern rifle based on the proven Model 98 system. Its robust receiver, large claw extractor, and dependable feeding made it an excellent foundation for later sporting conversions. Many examples were subsequently restocked and refinished for hunting use, with Mannlicher-style stocks becoming especially popular for their distinctive appearance and quick handling in timber and mountain country.
This rifle retains about 95% of its current refinished metal finish, with light scratches, minor corrosion freckling, and normal handling and operational wear. The checkered walnut stock remains in Very Good condition with only light dents and no chips or cracks, while the bright bore has sharp rifling and rates 9/10. The action functions correctly, though the receiver sight is incomplete because its upper assembly is missing. Overall, this is a Very Good custom Mauser sporting rifle with an excellent bore, classic European styling, and solid hunting appeal.
