Our Assessment: The pre-64 Winchester Model 70 is one of America’s most respected bolt-action sporting rifles, valued for its controlled-round-feed action, strong construction, and refined handling. This 1949 example began life in .257 Roberts and was later rechambered to .257 Weatherby Magnum, creating a custom high-velocity sporting rifle. It features a 24″ barrel, internal box magazine, checkered walnut stock, factory-style front sight, and a Leupold VX-Freedom 3-9×33 scope.
Introduced in 1936, the Model 70 earned the enduring nickname “The Rifleman’s Rifle” and became a benchmark for American sporting-rifle design. The .257 Weatherby Magnum was developed to provide exceptional velocity and flat trajectory for long-range hunting, especially for deer, antelope, and similar game. Custom conversions of pre-64 Model 70 rifles were common among serious hunters seeking modern ballistic performance from the proven Winchester action, though such alterations reduce collector originality compared with factory-configured examples.
This rifle retains about 90% of its original metal finish, with thinning blue, scattered scratches, minor corrosion freckling, and honest handling and operational wear. The walnut stock remains in Good condition with scratches and compression dents but no chips or cracks, while the bright bore has sharp rifling and rates 9/10 despite some copper fouling. The action functions correctly, and the mounted Leupold scope adds practical hunting utility. Overall, this is a Good-condition custom pre-64 Model 70 with a strong bore and excellent sporting appeal.
