Our Assessment: The Browning Model 53 is a finely made modern reproduction of Winchester’s classic small-frame lever-action sporting rifle, manufactured by Miroku in Japan. Chambered in .32-20 W.C.F., this 1990 example features a 22″ barrel, full-length tubular magazine, checkered walnut stocks, capped semi-pistol grip, and shotgun-style buttplate. Its compact proportions, mild chambering, and high-quality fit and finish make it an attractive rifle for collectors, recreational shooters, and small-game hunters.
The original Winchester Model 53 was introduced in the 1920s as a refined sporting variation of the Model 1892 action. It was offered in several traditional pistol-caliber chamberings and became known for its light weight, smooth handling, and elegant stock configuration. Browning’s limited Miroku-produced version preserved the classic appearance and Browning-designed action while benefiting from modern manufacturing tolerances and metallurgy, making these rifles well regarded among collectors of both Browning and Winchester-pattern lever actions.
This rifle retains about 98% of its original finish, with only minor handling and storage wear and a few fine scratches. The checkered walnut stocks remain in Excellent condition with no chips or cracks, while the bright bore has sharp rifling and rates 9.75/10. The action functions correctly, and the included box adds further collector appeal. Overall, this is an Excellent Browning Model 53 with strong originality, excellent mechanical condition, and desirable presentation.
