Markings: The left side of the barrel is marked “- WINCHESTER MODEL 70 375 H&H MAG. -“, along with Winchester’s New Haven address. The right side of the barrel is marked. The left side of the receiver is marked “WINCHESTER / TRADEMARKS LICENSED FROM OLIN CORP.”. The right side of the receiver is marked with the serial number. The floor plate is marked “SUPER EXPRESS”. 

Barrel Length: 24″. Mag-Na-Ported. 

Sights / Optics: The front sight is a hooded beaded blade, dovetailed to a serrated ramped base, screwed to the barrel. The rear sight is a U-notch blade, dovetailed to a ramped base, screwed to the barrel. The top of the receiver is mounted with a Zeiss Conquest 3.5-10×44 scope, with a duplex reticle. The glass in the scope is clear. The scope shows no notable wear. Overall, the scope rates in Excellent condition. The scope is mounted to the receiver by a two-piece Leupold base, and sits in 1″ quick detach rings. Included with the scope is the original Zeiss scope cover. 

Stock Configuration & Condition: The stock is a one-piece checkered walnut stock, with a capped semi-pistol grip, fluted monte carlo comb with cheekpiece, black rubber KickEEZ buttpad (buttpad not original to the rifle), and a sling stud in the belly of the buttstock and a sling stud on the barrel. The LOP measures 13 3/4″ from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttpad. The stock shows light wear, with a few light scratches and dings scattered throughout, with the most notable imperfections being on the bottom of the forend. The stock’s finish is intact, and the checkering is well defined. The stock fits tightly to the barreled action, with no play. There are no chips or cracks. Overall, the stock rates in Very Good to Fine condition.

Finish Originality: Refinished

Bore Condition: The bore is bright with sharp rifling. There is no erosion in the bore, but there is some light fouling present. In this writer’s opinion, the bore rates 9.75/10. 

Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 95% of its current metal refinish. The balance of the finish shows light wear with some light scratches and thinning of the finish on the floorplate. The Duracoat finish on the barrel is intact, and shows only light superficial imperfections and a few minor dings. The bluing on the receiver is intact. The jeweling on the bolt is vivid and bright, with only light operational wear present. The markings are clear and legible. The screw heads are lightly tooled, but all retain strong and serviceable slots. Overall, this rifle rates in Very Good condition. 

Mechanics: The action functions correctly, as does the safety. We did not fire this rifle, but we did perform a mechanic’s check. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.

Our Assessment: Winchester’s Model 70 Classic Super Express was built as a dangerous game/safari version of the “Rifleman’s Rifle,” pairing a controlled round feed action, classic Model 70 aesthetics, and heavy magnum chamberings. This example is chambered in .375 H&H Magnum, one of the most respected large and dangerous game cartridges in the world, valued for deep penetration, reliability, and broad international hunting use. This rifle features a 24″ Mag-Na-Ported barrel, hooded bead front sight, rear U-notch sight, Super Express-marked floorplate, checkered walnut stock, barrel-mounted front sling stud, and a Zeiss Conquest 3.5-10×44 scope with clear glass mounted in quick-detach rings. The .375 H&H chambering, Classic Super Express configuration, quality Zeiss optic, Mag-Na-Porting, and traditional Winchester layout should appeal to hunters and collectors looking for a capable safari-style rifle with practical field upgrades.

This rifle rates in Very Good overall condition, retaining about 95% of its current metal refinish. The bore is bright with sharp rifling, no erosion, and only light fouling present, rating 9.75/10 in this writer’s opinion. The walnut stock rates in Very Good to Fine condition, showing light scratches and dings, most notably on the bottom of the forend, while retaining intact finish, well-defined checkering, tight fit, and no chips or cracks; the black KickEEZ buttpad is not original to the rifle. The Duracoat finish on the barrel is intact with light superficial imperfections and a few minor dings, the receiver bluing remains intact, and the floorplate shows light scratches and finish thinning. The bolt jeweling remains vivid and bright with only light operational wear, the Zeiss scope rates in Excellent condition, the markings are clear and legible, and the screw heads are lightly tooled but serviceable. The action and safety function correctly, and the rifle includes the mounted scope and original Zeiss scope cover.
