Markings: The top of the receiver is marked, “660 / 1940” The left side of the receiver is marked with a Reichsadler and, “111 C / G.29/40”. All serialized parts are matched save for the bolt disassembly disc and the belly of the stock which is marked, “5976k” along with several “77” code Waffenamt. The side of the stock has a “H” Heerswaffenamt followed by two “77” Waffenamt. There are various Reichsadler and “77” code Waffenamt throughout along with three “623” Waffenamt on the receiver. There is no visible import mark.

Sights / Optics: The front sight is a barleycorn post set atop a serrated ramped base with a protective hood. The rear sight is a sliding u-notch blade attached to a sliding tangent escalator assembly marked out to 20.
Stock Configuration & Condition: The stock is a two piece wood set with a capped forend/bayonet lug & hole for the missing cleaning rod, barrel band w/ sling bar, through bolt, semi-pistol grip, sling well & passthrough, bolt disassembly disc, straight comb, and steel buttplate. There are moderate scratches and pressure dents throughout. There are several small chips and chunks missing along with a repair at the heel. The LOP measures 13 1/8” from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttplate. Overall this stock rates at about Good overall condition as refurbished.

Bore Condition: The bore is gray and the rifling is pronounced. There is heavy erosion and light spots of pitting throughout. In this writer’s opinion, the bore rates at 6.5/10.
Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 20% of its metal finish. There is heavy thinning and patina throughout along with scratches and nicks. The action has moderate wear. The screw heads range from sharp to lightly tooled. The markings are worn and blurry in spots. Overall, this rifle rates in about Good condition.
Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We did not fire this rifle. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.

Our Assessment: The German G.29/40 was developed from the Polish wz.29 Mauser after Germany occupied Poland in 1939 and took control of the Radom rifle factory, its machinery, components, and unfinished arms. Production and assembly were placed under the supervision of Steyr-Daimler-Puch, identified by the 660 manufacturer code, with the resulting rifles adapted for German service and designated G.29/40. Chambered in 7.92x57mm Mauser and built around the proven Model 98 action, the G.29/40 retained much of its Polish lineage while incorporating German inspection markings and military acceptance standards. This 1940 example bears the desirable 660 receiver code, numerous WaA77 and WaA623 inspection marks, and the G.29/40 model designation associated with this uncommon wartime program. This rifle retains approximately 20% of its metal finish, with heavy thinning, patina, scratches, nicks, and moderate operational wear throughout. Most serialized components are reported as matching, with the exceptions of the bolt-disassembly disc and the refurbished stock, which is numbered 5976k and bears multiple WaA77 inspection marks. The gray bore retains pronounced rifling but exhibits heavy erosion and scattered light pitting, resulting in a 6.5/10 rating in this writer’s opinion. The stock shows moderate scratches, pressure dents, small chips, areas of material loss, and a repair at the heel, while the cleaning rod is absent. Despite its service wear, the rifle retains clear historical markings, its original military configuration, and a functional action.
The G.29/40 is an important and comparatively scarce Mauser variant that documents the German use of captured Polish arms production during the opening years of World War II. Its combination of Polish wz.29 design features, Steyr oversight, German military markings, and limited production gives it considerable appeal among advanced collectors of Mauser rifles, Polish military arms, and German wartime firearms. This example shows substantial service and arsenal-refurbishment wear, but its largely matching components, extensive Waffenamt markings, absence of an import mark, and authentic military character make it a noteworthy representative of this historically significant transitional rifle. -R.E.
