Year of Manufacture: 1929 / C&R. The barrel is dated May 1929. The “B” suffix and M2-pattern components indicate the rifle was assembled or arsenal-upgraded to the improved M2 configuration.

Markings: The top of the receiver is marked “U.S. / SPRINGFIELD / ARMORY / M1922 MII / CAL. .22 / 18934B”. The barrel is marked “LONG RIFLE / CARTRIDGE ONLY”. The underside of the barrel is marked “S A” above the Springfield Armory flaming bomb and “5-29”, indicating Springfield Armory manufacture in May 1929. The bolt body is marked “D 28223-2”. The bolt safety is marked “NS / M2”, and the safety housing is marked “READY”. The rear aperture sight is marked with the Lyman trademark, “REG. U.S. PAT. OFF.”, and an elevation scale graduated from 25 through 125.
Barrel Length: 24”.
Sights / Optics: The front sight is a military-style blade mounted near the muzzle. The rear sight is a receiver-mounted Lyman micrometer aperture sight adjustable for windage and elevation. The elevation staff is graduated from 25 to 125 yards. The sight shows moderate operational wear, finish loss, scratches, and light oxidation but remains complete and serviceable.
Stock Configuration & Condition: The stock is a one-piece walnut military target stock with a semi-pistol grip, straight comb, finger grooves in the forearm, and a checkered steel buttplate. The LOP measures 13 1/4” from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttplate. The stock shows scattered handling marks, scratches, shallow compressions, finish wear, and areas of discoloration consistent with age and service use. There are no notable chips or cracks visible in the provided photographs. The stock rates in about Very Good overall condition.
Magazine Quantity & Condition: One detachable 5-round .22 Long Rifle magazine in Very Good condition.
Type of Finish: Parkerized steel barrel, receiver, bottom metal, bolt components, and sights.
Finish Originality: The rifle has a military parkerized finish consistent with an arsenal rebuild or M2 upgrade. The barrel, bolt, and M2-pattern components appear appropriate to its current military configuration.
Bore Condition: The bore is bright and the rifling is sharp. There is no notable erosion in the bore. In this writer’s opinion, the bore rates 9.5/10.
Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 95% of its parkerized metal finish. The balance of the finish shows light to moderate operational and handling wear. There are scattered scratches, small scuffs, edge thinning, and finish loss concentrated around the bolt raceway, bolt handle, receiver sight, safety, and other moving components. The bright bolt body shows scratches, polishing, discoloration, and light freckling from use. The receiver-mounted sight displays more pronounced finish loss, scratches, and areas of light oxidation. The screw heads are lightly tooled with serviceable slots. The pins are generally clean. The markings are clear, sharp, and legible. Overall, this rifle rates in about Very Good to Fine condition as an arsenal-upgraded military trainer.
Mechanics: The action functions correctly. The bolt cycles smoothly, the safety functions, and the trigger releases the striker as intended. We did not fire this rifle. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.
Box, Paperwork & Accessories: There is no box or paperwork. Included are one 5-round magazine and a brown leather military-style sling with brass hardware that shows oxidation. The sling remains pliable and shows age-related handling wear but no significant cracking.
Our Assessment: The Springfield M1922 series was developed as a precision .22-caliber training rifle that closely duplicated the handling and operation of the M1903 Springfield service rifle while substantially reducing ammunition cost and allowing use on indoor and short-range training courses. Manufactured at Springfield Armory, these rifles were built to a much higher standard than ordinary sporting rimfires and were used by the military, ROTC programs, shooting teams, and government-sponsored marksmanship organizations.
The M2 configuration represented the final major refinement of the M1922 family. It incorporated an improved bolt assembly, revised cocking and safety components, and other mechanical changes intended to provide greater strength and reliability. Many earlier rifles were returned to Springfield Armory and upgraded with M2 components, with suffix markings added to identify their revised configuration. This example carries a May 1929 Springfield barrel, an M2-pattern bolt and safety, and a military Lyman micrometer aperture sight.
This rifle retains its desirable military target configuration with finger-grooved walnut stock, receiver-mounted aperture sight, detachable magazine, and leather sling. Its bright bore with sharp rifling, strong parkerized finish, and correctly functioning action make it attractive both as a collectible U.S. martial training rifle and as a quality vintage rimfire target rifle.
