Year of Manufacture: The barrel is dated May 1926. The rifle was subsequently rebuilt or converted to the later M2 configuration. C&R Eligible.

Action Type: Bolt Action Rifle fed by a Detachable 5-Round Box Magazine.

Markings: The top of the receiver is marked “U.S. / SPRINGFIELD / ARMORY / CAL. .22 M2” and “1388”. The top of the barrel near the receiver is marked “SA” over the Ordnance flaming bomb and “5-26”. The bolt handle is marked “NS / M2”. The bolt body is marked “D 28223-2”. The rear sight is marked with a manufacturer’s name and target-style logo, with its elevation scale graduated from “0” through “125”.

Barrel Length: 24”.

Sights / Optics: The front sight is a blade mounted to a barrel-mounted base near the muzzle. The rear sight is a receiver-mounted micrometer aperture sight with adjustable windage and elevation. The elevation bar is graduated from 0 to 125. The sight shows operational wear, scratches, finish loss, and scattered oxidation, but its markings remain legible.

Stock Configuration & Condition: The stock is a one-piece walnut military target stock with a semi-pistol grip, straight comb, finger grooves, and a serrated steel buttplate. The LOP measures 13 1/4” from the front of the trigger to the back of the buttplate. The stock shows scattered scratches, compressions, handling marks, and areas of finish wear. There are some more notable scratches and abrasions on the buttstock and around the action. No cracks or significant chips are visible. The stock appears to have had its finish refreshed. The stock rates in about Very Good condition as refinished.

Magazine Quantity & Condition: One 5-round detachable .22 Long Rifle magazine is included. The magazine shows operational wear and finish loss and rates in about Good to Very Good condition.

Type of Finish: Parkerized and blued steel with a bright-finished bolt assembly.

Finish Originality: The metal finish appears consistent with an arsenal rebuild or conversion. The stock finish appears to have been refreshed.

Bore Condition: The bore is bright and the rifling is sharp. There is no notable erosion visible in the bore. In this writer’s opinion, the bore rates 9/10.

Overall Condition: This rifle retains about 85% of its metal finish. The balance of the finish shows moderate operational and handling wear. There is finish thinning on the receiver edges, barrel, trigger guard, floor metal, and sight assembly. The rear sight displays scratches, scuffs, finish loss, and scattered oxidation. The bolt assembly shows polishing, discoloration, and operational wear. There are scattered scratches and light marks throughout the remaining metal surfaces. The screw heads range from sharp to lightly tooled with serviceable slots. The pins are generally clean. The markings are clear and legible. Overall, this rifle rates in about Very Good condition as arsenal rebuilt.

Mechanics: The action functions correctly. The safety and magazine release function as intended. We did not fire this rifle. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.

Box, Paperwork & Accessories: One 5-round magazine and one brown leather sling with brass hardware. The sling remains pliable, has no visible cracks, and rates in about Good condition. No box or paperwork is included.

Our Assessment: The Springfield M1922 series was developed as a high-quality, small-bore training rifle that allowed military personnel and competitive shooters to practice with a rifle closely approximating the handling and sighting characteristics of the M1903 Springfield while using economical .22 Long Rifle ammunition. Manufactured at Springfield Armory, these rifles were built to a considerably higher standard than most contemporary rimfire trainers and remain admired for their machining, accuracy, and robust construction.

The M2 represented the final major evolution of the M1922 family, incorporating an improved bolt and firing mechanism along with other refinements intended to improve reliability and serviceability. This example is fitted with a May 1926 Springfield Armory barrel and was later rebuilt or converted into M2 configuration, as indicated by the receiver, bolt-handle, and bolt-body markings. Its early barrel date paired with the later M2 components provides visible evidence of the rebuilding and modernization programs commonly encountered on military training rifles.

This example retains its military-style walnut target stock, adjustable receiver aperture sight, detachable magazine, and correct M2-marked bolt components. The bright bore with sharp rifling, functional action, included magazine, and serviceable leather sling make it attractive as a collectible U.S. martial training rifle as well as a quality vintage target rifle.
