Our Assessment: This Winchester Model 1892, manufactured in 1911 and chambered in .25-20 WCF, is a C&R-eligible lever-action rifle with classic early 20th-century Winchester sporting appeal. The 24″ barrel, full-length tubular magazine, capped forend, straight-grip walnut stock, crescent steel buttplate, and clear Winchester barrel, tang, and serial markings all support its traditional Model 1892 rifle configuration. The .25-20 WCF chambering adds interest as a light-recoiling small-game and target cartridge historically associated with the 1892 platform.
Condition is fair overall, with the rifle retaining about 25% of its original blue finish. The remaining bluing is fading to a brown patina with corrosion staining, scratches, scattered nicks, and general handling wear. The markings remain clear, which is a meaningful positive, but the screw condition varies, with some sharp, some heavily tooled, and the tang screw specifically noted as being in poor shape. The bore is dark with rifling ranging from faint to defined, along with erosion and pitting throughout, rating 6/10 in the writer’s opinion.
The stock is in Good condition but has several notable issues, including added finish, scattered scratches and compression dents, a few chips and gouges, light wrist cracking, and a slightly loose buttstock. Mechanically, the action functions correctly, the half-cock safety is present, and the trigger is crisp; however, the missing right cartridge guide screw is an important mechanical and completeness concern even though the guide itself is present. Overall, this is a representative but well-used Winchester Model 1892 in .25-20 WCF, best viewed as a restoration candidate, display piece, or cautious shooter-grade example after proper inspection and repair, with value moderated by bore wear, finish loss, stock issues, screw condition, and the missing cartridge guide screw.
