Our Assessment: The Mossberg 940 Pro Tactical was developed as a modern defensive and duty-oriented semi-automatic shotgun, incorporating a redesigned gas system, enlarged controls, an aggressively beveled loading port, an extended magazine tube, and an optics-ready receiver. The Thunder Ranch configuration was produced in cooperation with Clint Smith’s renowned firearms-training institution and combines the practical features of the 940 Pro Tactical with distinctive Thunder Ranch markings and an olive-drab finish.
This example carries exceptional provenance beyond its factory Thunder Ranch configuration. Its included certificate states that the shotgun was personally owned and shot by Clint Smith and identifies it by matching serial number. Smith founded Thunder Ranch in 1993 after a career that included military service, law enforcement, and decades of firearms instruction, becoming one of the most recognizable and influential defensive-firearms instructors in the United States.
The shotgun remains in Very Good Plus condition with a bright 9.5/10 bore, strong original finish, compact 12 5/8″ length of pull, fixed Cylinder choke, fiber-optic front sight, and optics-ready receiver. The combination of factory Thunder Ranch features, documented Clint Smith ownership, his signature, and a serial-number-matched certificate makes this a particularly compelling example for collectors of modern tactical firearms and firearms-training memorabilia.
