Our Assessment: This Freedom Arms Model 97 Premier Grade is a high-quality single-action revolver chambered in .357 Magnum and accompanied by an additional 9mm cylinder. Built in Freedom, Wyoming, the Model 97 is a slightly more compact Freedom Arms platform than the Model 83 while still retaining the company’s reputation for precision machining, tight tolerances, and excellent fit and finish. This example features a 5 1/2″ stainless barrel, side loading gate, shrouded ejector rod, fixed serrated ramp front sight, adjustable square-notch rear sight, and two-piece ebony Micarta grips, giving it a refined and practical field or target configuration.
Condition is Excellent overall, with the revolver retaining about 97% of its original stainless finish. There are light scratches and handling marks throughout, but the markings remain clear and the screw heads are sharp. The ebony Micarta grips are also in Excellent condition, showing only minor handling wear with no chips or cracks. The Premier Grade marking, clean stainless presentation, and included factory box and manual add to the revolver’s overall appeal and completeness.
The bore is bright with sharp rifling and no erosion, though some stubborn copper fouling is present, rating 9/10 in this writer’s opinion. Mechanically, the action functions correctly, with tight timing and lockup, which is especially important on a precision single-action revolver. As with any used firearm, a thorough cleaning and inspection are advisable before use, particularly when switching between the .357 Magnum and included 9mm cylinder. Overall, this is a desirable Freedom Arms Model 97 Premier Grade with excellent finish, strong bore condition, tight mechanics, premium grips, and added versatility from the extra 9mm cylinder.
