Our Assessment: This CMP Expert Grade Springfield M1 Garand was originally manufactured between 1955 and 1957. As part of the Civilian Marksmanship Program’s (CMP) refurbishment, it was rebarreled with a Criterion barrel in 2022 and refinished to ensure reliability and accuracy. CMP Expert Grade rifles are built to be excellent shooters, combining historical receivers with new barrels and new stock sets, making them ideal for both collectors and competitive marksmen. The Criterion barrel ensures a high level of accuracy, making this rifle a strong candidate for marksmanship competitions or range use.
The M1 Garand, designed by John C. Garand, was adopted by the U.S. military in 1936 and became the standard service rifle throughout World War II and the Korean War. Its semi-automatic action and eight-round en-bloc clip provided U.S. soldiers with superior firepower compared to enemy forces armed with bolt-action rifles. The rifle earned high praise, with General George S. Patton calling it “the greatest battle implement ever devised.” Today, the CMP continues to preserve the legacy of the Garand by offering refurbished rifles like this 1950s model, ensuring that both collectors and shooters can own a piece of history that remains functional and relevant.
