Our Assessment: The Savage Model 24V Series D is a classic American over/under combination gun, pairing a rifle barrel over a shotgun barrel in a compact and practical break-action platform. Chambered in .22 Hornet over 20 gauge, this example offers more centerfire rifle capability than the rimfire Model 24 variants while still retaining the versatility of a 3” chambered 20 gauge shotgun barrel. With its 24” barrels, top-lever break action, extractor, hammer-mounted barrel selector, fixed Improved Cylinder choke, and rifle-style sights, this Model 24V is well suited for small game, varmints, camp use, and general field carry.
This combo gun is in Very Good condition overall, retaining about 98% of its original blued and case colored metal finish with light handling wear and scattered light scratches. The two-piece checkered wood stocks rate in Fine condition, showing light handling wear, scratches, and compression marks, but no chips or cracks. Both bores are bright, the .22 Hornet rifling is sharp, and there is no erosion in either bore, with only minor fouling noted in the rifle barrel and light fouling in the 20 gauge bore, rating 8 out of 10 in this writer’s opinion. The action functions correctly, the lockup is tight with no play, and the markings are clear. This Model 24V Series D should appeal to Savage collectors, outdoorsmen, and shooters looking for a versatile centerfire/shotgun combination gun with strong finish, bright bores, and its factory serialized box.
