Our Assessment:  The Smith & Wesson Model 58 was introduced in the mid-1960s as the fixed-sight service revolver counterpart to the more refined Model 57. Chambered in .41 Magnum, the Model 58 came out of an effort to create a powerful law-enforcement revolver cartridge that would offer more authority than the .357 Magnum while being more controllable and practical than the .44 Magnum. Built on Smith & Wesson’s large N-frame, the Model 58 used a plainer working-gun configuration with a 4” solid-rib barrel, fixed service sights, blue finish, and double action/single action lockwork. Although the .41 Magnum never saw broad police adoption, the Model 58 has become a desirable revolver among collectors and shooters who appreciate its short production history, unusual chambering, and strong service revolver character. Early 1964-1965 examples are especially appealing as first-era .41 Magnum Smith & Wessons and as one of the more distinctive fixed-sight N-frame magnums.

This Smith & Wesson Model 58 retains about 85% of its metal finish with muzzle, barrel, sideplate, edge, cylinder, and backstrap wear, along with scattered scratches, compression marks, corrosion freckling, and subdued case color. The Pachmayr Gripper stocks rate Fine, the bore is bright with sharp rifling and minor fouling, rating 9 out of 10 in this writer’s opinion, and the action functions correctly with smooth double-action pull, crisp single-action break, light chamber play in full lockup, and no endshake. The included Andrews Custom Leather right-handed holster adds practical field or carry appeal, making this a solid choice for Smith & Wesson collectors, .41 Magnum enthusiasts, and buyers looking for an honest early Model 58 with strong mechanical condition.
