Our Assessment: The Remington Model 700 Classic is a desirable limited-production sporting rifle from Remington’s annual Classic series, with the 1988 edition chambered in .35 Whelen. The .35 Whelen is a powerful medium-bore sporting cartridge developed from the .30-06 Springfield case and later standardized by Remington, with the Model 700 Classic serving as its first commercial Remington rifle offering in 1988. This example is configured with a 22” barrel, factory iron sights, internal magazine with hinged floorplate, blued finish, and a one-piece checkered stock with semi-pistol grip, straight comb, rubber buttpad, and checkered forend.

This Model 700 Classic is in Very Good condition overall, retaining about 98% of its original blued metal finish with handling wear, light scratches, and faint surface rust forming, including a few faint spots on the barrel. The stock rates in Very Good condition, showing light handling wear, scattered scratches and compression marks, and a large chip on the left side in the checkering, but no cracks. The bore is bright with sharp rifling, no erosion, and rates 9 out of 10 in this writer’s opinion. The action functions correctly, the safety operates properly, the markings are clear and legible, and the screw heads are sharp. This rifle should appeal to Remington collectors, Model 700 Classic enthusiasts, and hunters looking for a .35 Whelen rifle with strong bore condition and classic American sporting-rifle appeal.
