Our Assessment: The Smith & Wesson Model 25 is part of the company’s respected N-frame target revolver family, tracing its lineage to the postwar .45 Hand Ejector and Model of 1955 Target revolvers. Built on the large N-frame, the Model 25 combined S&W’s smooth double action/single action lockwork with target sights, a heavy barrel profile, and big-bore chamberings that appealed to serious revolver shooters. The 25-5 variation chambered the platform in .45 Colt, giving shooters a classic American cartridge in a finely made Smith & Wesson target revolver rather than the more traditional single-action format associated with the round. Produced during the 1980-1982 period, this example comes from a desirable era of Smith & Wesson revolver manufacture and retains the pinned full-rib barrel configuration, adjustable target sights, blue finish, and case-colored hammer and trigger that collectors often associate with classic S&W craftsmanship. The .45 Colt chambering gives this revolver strong appeal to N-frame collectors, big-bore revolver shooters, and enthusiasts who appreciate the combination of old cartridge history with modern double-action target revolver handling.
This Smith & Wesson Model 25-5 is a .45 Colt double action/single action N-frame revolver with a 6” pinned full-rib barrel, adjustable white-outline rear sight, red-insert front sight, blue finish, case-colored hammer and trigger, and two-piece floral-engraved checkered target stocks with bronze S&W medallions. The revolver retains about 97% of its metal finish with minor scratches and handling marks, areas of forming patina, noticeable polish marks on the left side of the frame below the cylinder, and a cylinder turn line. The grips rate in Excellent condition with minor handling marks, sharp checkering, and no chips or cracks. The bore is bright with sharp rifling, fouling in the grooves, and no erosion, rating 9 out of 10 in this writer’s opinion. The action functions correctly, and the lockup is tight with minimal play at each chamber. This revolver should appeal to Smith & Wesson collectors, .45 Colt enthusiasts, N-frame shooters, and buyers looking for a clean Model 25-5 with strong finish, attractive stocks, and classic S&W target revolver features.
