Our Assessment: This JM-marked Marlin Model 1895GS Guide Gun is a desirable North Haven-produced stainless lever-action rifle chambered in .45-70 Government. Manufactured in 2002, it represents the pre-Remington-era Marlin production that many collectors and shooters specifically seek out. The rifle retains about 95% of its original stainless finish, with scattered scratches noted throughout, most prominently on the receiver sides. The markings are clear, the screw heads are sharp, and the rifle presents overall in Very Good condition.
The bore is another strong point, described as bright with sharp rifling, no erosion, and only light fouling, rating 9.5/10 in the writer’s opinion. Mechanically, the action functions correctly and smoothly, and the trigger is noted as crisp. The rifle has not been test fired, and the presence of hardened storage oil on the bolt suggests that a careful cleaning would be worthwhile before use. The 18 1/2″ barrel, stainless finish, straight-grip walnut stock, and .45-70 chambering make this a compact, powerful, and practical Guide Gun configuration.
The stock set is in Very Good condition, showing light handling wear along with scattered light scratches and compression marks, but no chips or cracks. The rifle is equipped with an XS white-stripe front post, while the rear sight has been removed in favor of a 3-9×40 Pine Ridge scope with BDC reticle; the included optic adds utility, though its performance is not guaranteed. With the sling and scope included, this is a solid, original-finish JM-marked 1895GS that balances collector interest with field-ready utility, with its main detractors being cosmetic wear, the removed rear sight, and the need for cleaning.
